Program Prerequisites & Requirements

The Vancouver College of Dental Hygiene Inc. (VCDH) is part of Canada’s largest private educational facility and is dedicated to the highest standards of dental hygiene education.

Program seats are limited due to the large number of applicants. Therefore, not all applicants are guaranteed acceptance. 

Applicants  must write a mandatory admission test which includes:

  • English Comprehension
  • Biology
  • Spatial Relations
British Columbia Dental Hygiene Registration Requirements

Upon completion of the Dental hygiene Program offered at the Vancouver College of Dental Hygiene, the graduate must write and be successful on the National Dental Hygiene Certification Examination.

Successful Dental Hygiene National Certification Certificate holders are then eligible to apply to the Provincial Regulatory Authorities.

In order to practice Dental hygiene in the province of British Columbia, the graduates must then register with the regulatory body - the College of Dental Hygienists of British Columbia (CDHBC) prior to starting their career.

All fees associated with the National Board Examination, and registration with the CDHBC after graduation, are the responsibility of the individual student.

Applicants Educated in Canada

Candidates educated in British Columbia must have completed a minimum of 30 first-year university credits or an equivalent to the following subjects. Applicants from other provinces also require the first year university equivalent transferable credits which include:

  • Chemistry with Lab credits (6 credits)
  • Human Anatomy & Physiology including lab (6 credits)
  • Psychology (6 credits)
  • English (6 credits)
  • Statistics  (3 credits)
  • Elective Course (3 credits)

Applicants Educated Outside of Canada

Candidates who have graduated from a post-secondary institution in a foreign country are required to have their diplomas evaluated on a course-by-course basis by International Credential Evaluation Service (ICES) to determine if their education and courses taken are equivalent to the above requirements.

ICES must provide a supplemental evaluation and comprehensive report for our evaluation.
The applicants are responsible to pay all applicable ICES fees.

Applicants must arrange to have copies of the evaluation forwarded directly to the VCDH from ICES by the required deadline.
The dental hygiene program is taught in English. Candidates must have a fluent understanding of English as no special consideration will be given to students who have difficulty communicating in English.

English proficiency - English is the language in which the dental hygiene program is taught at the VCDH. 

It is imperative that the student has a strong grasp of the English language, both verbal and written in order to complete the dental hygiene program.

The National Dental Hygiene Certification Examination is offered in both English and French. A graduate must write the National Dental Hygiene Board Examination prior to registering with the College of Dental Hygienists of British Columbia.
